Some Positive Thoughts In A Not So Positive World

Some Positive Thoughts In A Not So Positive World

Life throws everyone a curveball now and then.  For many of us these days, it seems like we’re standing at home plate seeing nothing but curveballs.

That’s why it’s good to exit the batter’s box for a moment and ponder this:

Having a positive attitude in difficult times is not only an important predictor of resilience as I read in an article in Atlantic Magazine. I found out it’s the MOST important predictor.

Dr. Dennis Charney, Dean of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, conducted a study of approximately 750 Vietnam vets who were prisoners of war. Even though they’d been tortured and held in solitary confinement, these veterans – unlike many others of that era – did NOT develop depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) once released.

What was their secret?

After conducting in-depth interviews, Dr. Charney identified 10 characteristics that set them apart from the rest – and almost certainly made the difference in their ability to cope even given tremendously challenging and stressful conditions.

Number one of the list:  OPTIMISM.

Studies show that having a positive mood makes you more resilient both physically and emotionally.

Optimists find opportunities within situations that pessimists miss – being negative puts you in a purely defensive mode, narrowing your vision, and shutting your mind to possibilities because they are instead seen as risks.

Each new day will always bring fresh challenges – and the only thing you can truly control is your attitude and determination to move forward no matter what gets thrown your way.

Tomorrow’s coming sooner than you think, which is why having a solid plan for your financial future is always wise.

During challenging times you have to Adapt if you want to Thrive.
